Over time, the manufacturer has changed and adapted its models to meet the latest market demands, and in today’s review, we’re putting the MINI Paceman under the microscope. Design
The Paceman retains all the styling of a classic MINI, but its raised height, sloping roofline and four-wheel drive capability make this ride look more like an SUV than a hatchback.
The retro-styled interior is classy and well equipped, and despite only having room for 2 rear passengers, the cabin feels roomy and comfortable. On top of that, it’s surprisingly practical when you factor in the 50:50 split-folding seats – which will expand the 330 litre boot to an impressive 1,080 litres.
Features
As far as trims go, there’s plenty to choose from – and even the entry level MINI Paceman Cooper comes with bags of standard kit. A DAB Digital Radio, Bluetooth connection, USB connectivity, front and rear electric windows, stop/start technology and air conditioning all come as standard.
If you’re willing to shell out for added extras, opt for the D, S, SD or John Cooper Works trim and you’ll get a choice of paint colours and a leather trimmed steering wheel with mounted controls.
Performance & Handling
The quick and economical engines in the MINI Paceman make it a fun car to drive and relatively cheap to run – and the raised suspension, coupled with good refinement, means you’ll barely notice the bumps or road noise.
If you’re willing to sacrifice economy in the name of power and speed, we’d recommend the MINI Paceman John Cooper Works ALL4. The 218bhp engine will do 0-62mph in just 6.8 seconds, but returns just 38.9mpg – with CO2 emissions climbing towards to 169g/km.
If fuel economy is a priority, then the diesel engines are the way to go. The Cooper D boasts the lowest running costs in the lineup – thanks to CO2 emissions of 111g/km, it costs just £30 a year to tax and will return up to 67mpg. For the best combination of power and economy, we’d recommend stepping up to the Cooper SD. The 123bhp engine packs more punch and still returns a reasonable 62.8mpg – with 119g/km of CO2 emissions keeping annual road tax costs at £30.
