Mercedes-Benz, A Brief History

Mercedes-Benz is one of the oldest car makers and one of the best known automotive brands in the world, famous for its quality and durability. The company is headquartered in Stuttgart, Germany. Their slogan is “The best or nothing” and their logo, a three pointed star, represents the company’s domination on land, the sea and in the air.

The founders of Mercedes-Benz, Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz, were the pioneers of automobile manufacture who independently developed the world’s first internal combustion engine cars in 1886. In 1885 Daimler invented a motorcycle by installing a petrol internal combustion motor onto a bicycle. A year later he designed the first 4-wheel motor car in the world by putting his engine into a horse carriage. At the same time Benz built his Patent-Motorwagen, the first vehicle designed to be propelled by a motor. Even though the two men never actually met, their companies merged in 1926 to form Daimler-Benz.

The new company’s cars were branded as “Mercedes-Benz” as the name Daimler was sold to other companies after Daimler’s death (Jaguar still owns the name today). Mercedes was named after the daughter of a wealthy businessman Emil Jellinek who commissioned a racing car from Daimler.

In the years that followed, the company has become an important part of German economy and a symbol of German power. They have concentrated on producing high end luxury and performance cars and pioneered many new concepts and technologies. Today they produce luxury automobiles (many of which are used by diplomats worldwide), buses, coaches, and trucks. Mercedes-Benz Cars division today produces Mercedes-Benz and Smart cars.
