Motorbike Mondays: BMW GS 1200 Review

February 2, 2015

It’s Monday, which means we’re taking a closer look at another tasty two-wheeler – and today it’s the BMW GS 1200. In 2011, BMW produced its 2,000,000th motorcycle unit, and it was a BMW GS 1200. This isn’t strange when you consider that this adventurous bike is by far the most popular of all BMW motorcycles, both in the UK and abroad. It’s been BMW’s annual bestselling motorcycle several times since its conception in 2004 and is credited with starting a whole new category of motorcycles; the adventure tourer. It’s also starred in several books and TV shows, including Ewan McGregor’s Long Way Down. So let’s take a look at the most successful motorcycle of the last decade in today’s BMW GS1200 review!

Design

As far as looks go, the BMW GS 1200 certainly is a stunner. It looks bold and adventurous without too many frills. With sleek lines, a comfortable seat and a windshield that will keep the wind off you even at top speeds, the BMW GS 1200 has it all. Just seeing the bike makes you want to pack up your camping gear and drive until you run out of road. And when you do, the BMW GS 1200 is happy to take you off road as well.

Performance & Handling

The 2014 version of the BMW GS 1200 has been beefed up significantly when you compare it with its predecessor – with a new and improved output of 125bhp. Its torque peaks at a massive 125nm and the bike revs up beautifully because of it. The twin two cylinder engines have also been completely redesigned and are both air and liquid cooled now. Most BMW GS 1200 reviews report a fuel economy of around 43mpg – a satisfying figure indeed – but numbers aside, the BMW GS 1200 is an all-round amazing ride. It handles incredibly well, both at the high speeds it’s made for and the lower speeds you’ll face during traffic or in the city. The high revs make this BMW fast, easy to handle and dynamic.

Features

You’ll be spending a lot of time in the seat of the BMW GS 1200 – so it’s lucky the seating position is comfortable, the seat is accommodating and your view of the road is nothing short of commanding. The instrument cluster has both analogue and digital dials and the standard on-board computer is easy to navigate. Get the optional suspension adjustment and your BMW GS 1200 will be able to select between four riding modes; Rain, Dynamic, Enduro and Enduro Pro for maximum riding comfort. And no matter which options take your fancy, ABS comes as standard.

With prices starting at just over £9,000, getting the BMW GS 1200 financed is an entirely worthwhile investment. And if you need help financing this tough tourer, the Car Loan Warehouse can help.
