The DeLorean DMC-12 is making a comeback! Back to the Future fans can officially sign-up their interest in a pre-order application on monday. As the additional options and pricing haven’t yet been finalised there is now tie or deposit to pre-order.
The new DeLorean is not yet being built. Production is planned for early 2017; as there have been a few setbacks with part suppliers and regulatory boards. It will be built to exact specifications using all original parts.
The DeLorean Motor Company is manufacturing the new DMC-12. They are a separate company to the original manufacturers, however own the DeLorean trademark. It is said that they own 99% of the original factory stock- enough to make approximately 350 cars over the next six years. They also own the original technical drawings and blueprints.
In the first year of production, the DeLorean Motor Company plan to build one car a month, eventually leading to one a week leaving the work facility in Texas, United States.
A passed piece of legislation this year has meant that this iconic car can start its continuation series. Now thanks to this, fans can own a true piece of modern car and film history.
The first DeLorean prototype appeared in 1976, yet full production didn’t officially start until 1981. The original DeLorean manufacturer went bankrupt in 1982, just one year after production. It was too late to save the company and the part and valuables were sold onto other buyers. In this one year alone it is thought that about 9,200 DeLorean’s were produced.
Original DeLorean’s are currently on the market for anything between £25,000 and £35,000, dependant on the current condition of the car. The brand new DeLorean’s are due to be sold for £70,000, however this is only an approximate figure as pricing hasn’t been set in stone yet.
