As with any Mercedes the Sprinter is considered at the premium end of the LCV market and is aspired to by a large proportion of van drivers.

Originally launched in Europe in 1995 the Sprinter van replaced the MB TN van which had been in production since 1977. It was voted as International Van of the Year in 1995 and also went on to win awards in 2007 and 2008 by the motoring press.

The Mercedes Sprinter is marketed for the business market although it has been successfully converted into recreational vehicles such as camper vans.

The latest 2014 model is now available in nine different body styles and also has a 4WD option although it does receive some criticism for having no front wheel drive option and the high cost of optional extras.

Like most vans there is a panel van, a minibus, drop-side pickup and a chassis cab available with varying body lengths and heights that can be specified. Diesel engines are available as a 2.2-litre or a 3.0-litre V6 with power outputs from 95bhp to 190bhp. Where towing is a requirement, the 2000kg capacity is also viewed as a huge advantage over some of the competition.

Mercedes now offer ESP (Electronic Stability Program) as standard on all models and other technological advances include the stop-start blue efficiency package which cuts out the engine when neutral is selected at standstill. It then restarts when the brake pedal is released on automatic models or when the clutch is depressed with a manual gearbox.

One of the major attractions of the Mercedes is the level of service offered by the Mercedes truck dealers who commonly offer 24-hour repair and servicing to their customers enabling van operators to keep their fleet in use during the day. The added benefit of a new Sprinter is that you won’t be visiting the dealer for a service too often as the first service is not due until 37000 miles!

The latest version of the Sprinter launched in 2013 wasn’t completely new but was more of a face-lifted model with its bigger grille and newly designed headlights but with improved fuel economy and comfort it is still the one to beat.

The ‘new’ Sprinter isn’t actually new – it’s a face-lifted model – but this is more than just a new set of headlights and a bigger grille. Mercedes-Benz has improved the Sprinter throughout and it’s now more comfortable, returns better fuel economy and is just as good to drive as before. The Sprinter has always been the best large van on the market and now it’s even better.

The Mercedes may be a bit more costly than some of its rivals but at The Car Loan Warehouse we think you will find this is outweighed by lower running costs and increased second hand values.
