This Tuesday we’re looking at the best boy racer cars; those motors that are affordable, customisable and downright fun to drive. For anyone wondering which car is the best for cruising down the high street, we’ve made the choice a lot easier by putting together a list of the most popular motors for boy racers. In no particular order…
Ford Fiesta
Fiestas aren’t the fastest cars around, but they’re super reliable. However, the 1.4 Zetec versions will still give you the oomph you’re looking for. The fifth generation Ford Fiesta is one of Ford’s most popular cars and a used one can set you back anywhere from £2,000-4,000. If you shop around, it can even be bought with racing stripes pre-installed. Result.
Vauxhall Corsa
The Vauxhall Corsa: scourge of grannies and those of nervous dispositions. A nifty little car, both the old and new shape Corsas are widely seen throughout the UK. The fourth generation Corsa comes with a 1.2 or 1.4 petrol engine, but the older version can be bought with a powerful 1.4l diesel if you want more power and more miles between each fill-up. An older version can be had for less than £2,000, whereas a newer model can be bought from £4,000-8,000.
Renault Clio
Va Va Voom. From Thierry Henry ad campaigns to the streets of Britain, the Renault Clio is a sporty hatchback beloved by youths all over the country. The older, rounder Clio is available in 1, 1.2 and 1.4 litre versions. By far the most modded of any on this list, Clios look great with a bodykit – just make sure you don’t go over any speed bumps. Reliable, cheap and generally quite sporty looking, the older Clio can be bought from as low as £1,000, up to £3,500.
Fiat Punto
The Fiat Punto used to be a widely modified and beloved car. Nowadays, the new style Punto has replaced it as a must-have cruiser for boy racers to show off in car parks. A sleek and sporty looking ride, the Punto is also the most spacious hatchback around, so it’s great for boy racers who play taxi for their mates. Used Puntos can be bought as cheaply as a grand and up.
Citroen Saxo
A little car with a loud engine and a ton of mod potential, the Citroen Saxo has been around for such a long time it’s become a staple for boy racers everywhere. The Saxo weighs just 965lbs, so with the right engine it absolutely flies. With a design that’s gone largely unchanged since 1996, the Saxo is the hallmark of a boy racer and it’s rare to see one driven by anyone over the age of 30. Can be bought for less than a grand!
