Van Review: The Mercedes Sprinter

March 6, 2015

Mercedes-Benz – a premium car manufacturer whose badge is recognised the world over. The brand has long been associated with businessmen and wealthy motorists who appreciate luxury. However, it also makes waves in the van world thank to the Mercedes Sprinter – a versatile vehicle that comes with a choice of nine body styles and engine specifications. Favoured by courier companies across the UK, the Sprinter excels in every area. Already got your eye on a brand new sprinter? Our van and car loans can help.

Our Mercedes Sprinter review looks at why the van is so popular and what makes it such a workhorse.

Design

The Mercedes Sprinter’s size varies to suit different businesses and usage. The van is available in four different lengths on three different wheelbases with three roof variants, meaning you can guarantee to find an option that suits your needs. A lot of versions can have a double row of seating for carrying additional passengers. Space-wise, the largest model of the van has around 17 cubic metres of storage, which stands it alongside other high-end panel vans. The interior is spacious and the ride is fairly high, meaning you’ll get a great view of the road – which is particularly handy when driving such a large vehicle.

Mercedes Sprinter Specs

  • Power: 95-190bhp. The Mercedes Sprinter is one of the most powerful vans on the market – the 3.0 litre V6 CDI Diesel engine packs 190bhp and even the smaller 2.2 litre four cylinder version gives enough grunt for transport duties.
  • Weight: 3,000-5,000kg. Depending on the model, the van can end up weighing quite a bit. The weight’s not a problem, though, as the Sprinter is renowned for being a comfortable, stable drive.
  • Payload: 734kg-2,515kg
  • Loading height: 585mm – 790mm
  • Available in 4×4 and rear-wheel drive. The 4×4 version is the true off-road choice for those that need a go-anywhere van. There’s also extra traction control to help the Mercedes Sprinter get wherever it needs to go.

Features

The Mercedes Sprinter is sufficiently kitted-out – both the rear-wheel and 4×4 versions come equipped with the Mercedes BlueEFFICIENCY package, which tweaks the vehicles for economy through features like a stop/start engine, low energy power steering pump and low-rolling resistance tyres. No matter which option you choose, the van can tow up to 2,000kg, which makes it more appealing for a range of duties. It’s also got an ESP stability system which helps control van and trailer sway.

Any business owner will be pleased to hear the Mercedes Sprinter doesn’t skimp on safety. It’s got adaptive brake lights to warn drivers when suddenly braking, a full width bulkhead to protect passengers and the driver in a collision, adaptive ESP and acceleration skid control to add stability to the rear-wheel drive models and much more. Additionally, you can purchase versions of the Sprinter with useful tech features, from humble Bluetooth all the way up to built-in Satnav and rear parking cameras.

Mercedes Sprinter Finance

As a small-business owner or someone who needs a versatile, reliable and high performing van, you can’t go wrong with the Mercedes. Whichever model you opt for, you’ll be looking at prices between £20,000 and an upper limit of £38,000.
