Volkswagen, A Brief History
Volkswagen’s first car, the Type 1, is best known as “The Beetle”. It was designed by Ferdinand Porsche who was known mainly for designing luxury vehicles and race cars. However he was interested in creating a small car suitable for a family, and for years had been trying to get a manufacturer to participate. In 1933 Adolf Hitler got involved as he too wanted a car that was that was capable of transporting families, hence the name Volkswagen as it translates to “peoples car”. The Beetle is the longest running and most manufactured car of a single design platform in the world.
However because WWII started, Hitler’s plans to mobilize Germany were put on hold as the factory swapped to the production of armaments, and the vehicles already made went to the army. Once the war had ended the factory was taken over by the British and Major Ivan Hirst supervised the mass production of the Beetle. The vehicle gained popularity with the younger generation of drivers and continues to be a fashionable car with a massive cult following, as does the VW Type 2 better known as the “Camper”.
VW have been the largest car manufacturer in Europe since the 1970’s. Their vehicles are renowned for their reliability through excellent German engineering. The Golf has been their most popular model since its introduction in 1974, winning “world car of the year” in 2009 with the Mk6 six and again in 2013 with the Mk7.
Present day, the group is made up of twelve brands: Volkswagen Passenger Cars, Audi, SEAT, ŠKODA, Bentley, Bugatti, Lamborghini, Porsche, Ducati, Volkswagen Commercial Vehicles, Scania and MAN.
